Join this online workshop Mindful Stitching: Process or Outcome? with Helen Birmingham.
This workshop will introduce participants to the history, principles and processes behind using stitch as a form of mindfulness. We will look specifically at the links between mark-making and freedom of expression and communication through the act of stitching. We will take references from a wide range of stitching, including from the incredible autobiographical jacket created by psychiatric patient, Agnes Richter in 1895, to the use of stitch and text in contemporary textile art.
Participants will discover how a regular practice of mindful stitching can help with good mental health. We will look at some simple ways of how to get started and how to allow the work to ‘speak’. Together, we will work a small sample, looking specifically at the ‘automatic response to needle, thread and fabric’.
At the end of the activity, Helen will take the opportunity to launch a new collaborative project by Untangled Threads supported by The Embroiderers’ Guild, called “Process or Outcome”. The Participants will be given the opportunity to take part in the fundraising project which culminates in a new artwork by Helen Birmingham to be exhibited in 2027.
(It is NOT necessary to attend the workshop to join the project.)
